Dr. Emily Reigh

Dr. Emily Reigh (she/her) joins CoRE Lab as a postdoctoral fellow on the Writing Data Stories project. She earned her Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2022 in Science Education and Race, Inequality, and Language in Education. In addition, she holds an M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from the American University in Cairo.

Emily studies how to expand opportunities for students from minoritized language backgrounds to engage in the disciplinary practices of science. She draws from sociocultural and critical theories to study how science teachers learn to engage learners’ existing cultural and linguistic resources and to challenge the institutional structures that systematically devalue these resources.

On the Writing Data Stories project, Emily has developed and implemented curriculum for middle school students that explores environmental racism, or the disproportionate burden of pollution on communities of color, through data. Currently, she is co-designing curriculum on climate justice with teachers who work with newcomers. Together, they are exploring how translanguaging pedagogies that employ students’ full linguistic repertoires, including the other named languages that they speak, can support students’ development of data literacies.

Emily is also an instructor in the Berkeley Teacher Education Program, where she works with science and math teacher candidates on the implementation of justice-focused pedagogies and curriculum.
